The Nazgul, or Ringwraiths, were Sauron’s most terrible servants. They were originally mortal men. Sauron gave them the Nine Rings of Power in order to enslave them at will and thus became Specters. Little is known about the Nazgul’s real identities. It is said that three were great lords of Númenor. One was an Oriental whose name was Khamûl, being the only one whose identity is known. The Nazgul were condemned to exist only in the spectral world. Their lives were so stretched until their very existence became torture. They were permanently invisible, except when they used black robes to give them a visible shape. Sauron, and whoever wore the One Ring, could see them in their spectral form, like pale figures with burning eyes, gray hair, white and gray robes, and silver helmets.
